How to Apply Step 1: To apply for federal student aid, including federal education loans, complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) form at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA form should be filed after yearly tax returns are completed. Step 2: The school will review the FAFSA results. If approved, the student will receive a financial aid award letter. This letter allows the student and/or parent to apply for federal education loans. If the school participates in the Federal Family Education Loan Program (FFELP), Step 3: Apply for a loan online or call 1-800-338-5736 to request an application. Reduce Your Loan Rate Receive an additional 0.25% off your rate when payments are automatically deducted from a Navy Federal checking account or another financial institution's savings or checking account. Effective on Stafford and PLUS Loans disbursed after July 1, 2000, and effective on consolidation loans after May 1, 2002. Effective on Stafford and PLUS Loans disbursed after July 1, 2000, and effective on consolidation loans after May 1, 2002. Repayment status for Stafford loans begins 6 months after graduation.
